"Zum Zum" is the sound the airplane makes in Portuguese. The tune is a Rio De Janeiro Carnaval Marcha composed in 1950 by my grandfather Paulo Soledade and Fernando Lobo, as an ode to a dearly departed friend and fellow pilot. It was my grandfather’s first of many recorded compositions, and all of Rio used to sing this song during Carnaval as it became a major hit in 1951. The worldwide Bossa Nova movement was later incubated in my grandfather’s iconic Copacabana nightclub which he named "Zum Zum" when he opened it in 1961. Some of the most important Bossa Nova concerts happened at Zum Zum, with legendary artists like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Elis Regina, Baden Powel, Pixinguinha, Roberto Menescal, Dorival Caymmi and others. One of the most historic moments in all of Brazilian music happened at Zum Zum in October of 1964, when Vinicius de Moraes and Dorival Caymmi shared the stage for the first time. Needless to say, if not for “Zum Zum’ I wouldn’t be here playing Bossa Nova for you. This hypnotic recording is a tribute to my legacy and the birth of Bossa Nova!
